22-year-old Teofimo Lopez Jnr of Brooklyn, New York fulfilled the promise of his father, Teofimo Snr, that he would become a world champion in his 15th fight -- and in his 16th fight he will face feared pound for pound fighter Vasiliy Lomachenko -- this has been made all possible after a sensational second round knockout dished by Lopez Jnr against highly regarded defending champion Richard Comey of Ghana at the Madison Square Garden Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

After the feeling out first round in which Lopez and Comey tried to measure each other's distance, both combatants started to throw power punches as the second round started. As Lopez and Comey simultaenously threw each other's right, Lopez landed his to the chin of Comey who went down to the canvas in an instant. Comey staggered to the canvas as he was trying to get up but beat the count.

Lopez, sensing the end for his opponent, poured it on as Comey was trapped in the ropes connecting more than 20 unanswered punches. Referee David Fields came in to stop the slaughter at 1:13 of the round.

Comey, who won his IBF belt last February against Isa Chaniev in Frisco and defended it successfully against veteran Raymundo Beltran last June, didn't know what hit him as the young Lopez ascended into stardom at his expense.

Now the holder of the IBF world lightweight belt, Lopez (15-0-0, 12KOs) who became the 5th youngest lightweight world champion, is booked next to fight pound for pound fighter Vasiliy Lomachenko, holder of the WBO, WBC and WBA lightweight titles, for the highly anticipated undisiputed battle.

Lomachenko who once said "Teofimo Lopez who?" is now forced to recognize his fellow world champion and stablemate. Asked after Lopez's victory. Lomachenco said towards Lopez, "Welcome to my club. See you in April."
