Rising star Ryan 'Kingry' Garcia made short work of ambitious Romero Duno knocking out the Filipino at 1:38 in the very first round to capture the NABO and WBC Silver lightweight titles in the co-main event of the Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Sergey Kovalev WBO world light heavyweight championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).
Garcia, a Mexican descent born in California, was playing as a matador to Duno's bull who was charging at his opponent from the get go. But the rangy 5-foot-10 Garcia timed the 5-foot-7 Duno coming in and punished the Filipino with hooks to the head and the body. Even if he was a recipient of Garcia's bombs, Duno kept coming in but after another barrage of hooks and straights to the head and body, Duno finally wilted and crumpled to the canvas like a tree cut from its trunk.
"His style is to be there to be hit," Garcia, 21, who upped his undefeated record to 19 wins with 16 knockouts, said after the fight.
Duno, 24, who signed with Golden Boy Promotions in 2017, campaigned in the US since March 2017 winning all his fights along the way captured the NABO lightweight title against Mexican veteran Juan Antonio Rodriguez via 9th round stoppage last May. But his upward trajectory came to scratching halt tonight with the beating he received from Garcia. Duno dropped his record to 21 wins and two losses with 16 wins inside the distance.
