Elwin Soto of Mexicali, Mexico dug deep to retain his WBO world light flyweight belt as a determined Filipino challenger Edward Heno scored a knockdown in the 3rd round and was leading going in the 2nd half of the fight Thursday night (Friday in Manila) at the Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino in Indio, California, about two-hour drive east of Los Angeles in a card promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Heno was ahead on the three judges scorecards 58-55, 57-56 and 57-56 after the sixth round but Soto rallied in the second half of the fight to win by unanimous decision. Judge Zachary Young had it 114-113, Max Deluca and Patrick Morely both scored 115-112 all in favor of Soto.

Elwin Soto (L) and Edward Heno made it a war in Indio.

Soto thus successfully defended the belt he won just last June 21 against former world champion Angel Acosta of Puerto Rico who previously held the belt since 2017. Soto has now improved his record to 16-1-0 with 11 knockouts.

Heno, the OPBF light flyweight champion, absorbed his first defeat and dropped to 14-1-5, 5KOs.

Former world champion Angel 'Tito' Acosta finishes of Raymond Tabugon.

In the chief support, Angel Acosta bounced back from his defeat against Soto by knocking out Filipino Raymond Tabugon in the fifth round.
