Ronny Rios got a big win in his resume when stopped previously unbeaten Diego de la Hoya in the 6th round at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California Saturday night and snatched away the NABF super bantamweight belt.
After a caution first few rounds both fighters gave their all in the 5th round with Rios landing more. In the sixth Rios connected to the head and body of De La Hoya who went down for the first time. De La Hoya was able to stand up to beat the count before Referee Rudy Baragan waved off the contest.
Rios was leading on the scorecards of Hubert Minn and Max de Luca at 50-46 and 49-46 respectively before the stoppage while De La Hoya had it 50-45 on the scorecard of Alejandro Rochin.
De La Hoya absorbed his first career loss and dropped to 21-1-0, 10 KOs while Rios, who failed in his first title bid against Rey Vargas in 2017, has improved to 31-3-0, 15KOs.
