Former two division world champion turned promoter Gerry Pe?alosa is set to launch his latest project which aims to search for new professional boxing talent in the Philippines at the grassroots level.
The Ultimate Boxing Series is a tournament conceived by Pe?alosa together with Chot Reyes of ESPN 5. Last March, Pe?alosa held taped tryouts in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao for boxers in the flyweight and bantamweight division.
Try outs were open to any and all aspiring boxers from different stables and promoters. Pe?alosa stated that boxing icon Manny Pacquiao would also be involved in choosing the fighters who will participate in the tournament.
The boxers will be paired by the drawing of lots by Coach Chot and Gerry Pe?alosa for transparency purposes. The boxers who are in the list are ? for the flyweights: Abril Jay Abne, Christoval Furog, Ruben Dadivas, Ronel dela Cruz, Denmark Quibido, Ronel Sumalpong, Welben Montere, Joseph Bayubay, Ian Refuela, and Rey Tagulaylay; The bantamweights are Rimon Rama, Lenjun Retuerto, Dave Barlas, Lienard Sarcon, Aljum Pelesio, Ken Jordan, John Mark Tihuk, Gary Tamayo, Luis Evander Borje and Kevin Aseniero.
The fights are set for six rounds with the finals penned for eight rounds. Gerrypens Promotions announced that the boxers will arrive in Manila on May 16 for the official launching of the event.
The boxers and trainers will be housed in a single venue before the elimination round. An ESPN 5 crew will monitor and film their activities, training sessions, will conduct interviews, etc. following the concept of reality television show.
The videos, bouts, and interviews will be divided and aired weekly totalling 13 episodes starting June 2 at 12nn with the finals to be shown LIVE on August 25.
It has been the dream of Gerry Pe?alosa to find the next big star in Philippine boxing. At the height of his career, Pe?alosa dethroned WBC super flyweight champion Hiroshi Kawashima of Japan by split decision in Tokyo in 1997. He lost his title after three defenses. Then at 36 years old, with the odds stacked up against him, Pe?alosa won his second world title in 2007, the WBO bantamweight crown, by knocking out Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez with a body punch in 2007 in Sacramento. Pe?alosa hung up his gloves in 2010 with a record of 55-8-2,37KO?s.
Now he wants to continue his career in boxing as a promoter and help other Filipino boxers achieve their dream.
