MANDALUYONG CITY ? For more than a decade, every Filipino prospect fought under the shadow of Manny Pacquiao. Every up and comer with a decent punch and a good record would eventually be compared to the future Hall of Famer. But the comparison comes with great expectations. And more often than not, it was a bane rather than a boon.
Nineteen year old Carl Jammes Martin (11-0,10KO?s) is the latest to receive the ?next Pacquiao? label. The rising Ifugao star will be making his Metro Manila and live television debut this Saturday February 16 at the SM North Edsa Skydome in Quezon City. His heavy handed, all-action style is made for TV. Martin has fought foreign foes in his home province winning regional belts with the WBC, WBA and WBO. His fights have been shown live on social media but he has yet to be tested against higher level opponents. He is currently ranked number ten by the WBO and number 14 by the WBA.
He started boxing at the tender age of six. ?I watched my older brothers box. I had my first fight when I was seven years old,? Martin told this writer. He had early success as an amateur but he turned pro a couple of months before his 17th birthday.
Martin is in 12th grade at the Riverview Polytechnic and Academic, Inc in Ifugao. When he is not boxing he does ordinary house chores. He looks up to Manny Pacquiao as his favorite boxer but he also cites retired fighters Gerry Pe?alosa, who is promoting his latest fight, and Z Gorres as his other favorites. Martin has Pacquiao?s early fighting style but it would be interesting if he can develop the technical skills of a Pe?alosa and Gorres. Martin is a southpaw like all three of his idols.
Martin will be pitted against Petchorchae Kokietgym (17-2,8KO?s) of Thailand on the undercard of the bout between Dave Pe?alosa (14-0,10KO?s) and Marcos Cardenas (19-6-1,15KO?s).
Petcorchae lost to Giemel Magramo by TKO in the third round last October in a WBO Oriental flyweight title bout.
Martin did not guarantee anything when asked by this writer for his fight prediction.
This could very well wind up as a showcase fight for Martin but it will be interesting to follow the progression of his career. He doesn?t feel a lot of pressure now, just his youthful enthusiasm to just show up and fight. But things could change when more and more fans start looking at him under the microscope.
The Pe?alosa vs Cardenas bout will be for the vacant WBO Oriental featherweight title. The referee for this bout will be Atty Danrex Tapdasan. Supervising for the WBO is the organizations Vice President for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo. The three judges will be Martino Redona of the USA and Filipinos Danilo Lopez and Aquil Tamano.
