CHONGQING, CHINA ? Dong Youli of Qingdao, China stopped Pardeep Kharera of Rewari, India in the eighth round of a hard fought match for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific Youth welterweight title.
Both boxers tried to find their rhythm early in the fight, but neither could land a power punch. Both landed hard hooks but both had trouble trying to put together combinations. There were a lot of clinches and misses until the fifth round when Dong began to find his range and landed hard head shots. This began the momentum shift in favor of the Chinese boxer.
Kharera was hurt by a hard right in the seventh round and began to receive heavy punches in succession. In the eighth, a fading Kharera was at the receiving end of more blows to the head prompting Thai referee Surat Soikrachang to call a halt at the 2:06 mark.
Dong previously held this title but lost it to Filipino Adam Diu Abdulhamid by majority decision in Zhengzhou, China. The title was vacant again when Abdulhamid did not defend the belt and he also lost to Aussie Joel Camilleri in a non-title bout in Malvern, Australia.
Dong is now 13-1-1, 9KO?s while Kharera drops to 5-3, 4KO?s.
The WBO bout was supervised by WBO VP for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo.
The main event of the night, Qu Peng of China vs Joey Vegas (Joseph Lubega) of Uganda ended in bizarre fashion.
In the opening round, after a brief exchange, the Ugandan fell to the canvas clutching his knee. Japanese referee Michiaki Sumeya started to count then signaled the end when Vegas was obviously in no condition to continue. Time 1:02.
Qu was awarded the vacant OPBF Silver Cruiserweight title.
Vegas was in severe pain and attended to by medical personnel at ringside. He was brought to a hospital for possible injury on his knee ligaments.
The OPBF bout was supervised by Samson Iu of Macao.
For the undercards:
In a blood-tinged middleweight bout, Maheshati Bolatihan and Yue Zhuangzhuang battled to a unanimous draw. An accidental headbutt in round two drew blood from Botalihan?s forehead and the bridge of his nose. But this did not slow down the action one bit.
Wu Shan beat Zeng Yujie by unanimous decision, Jiang Cheng beat Zhang Gui Lin by TKO in the second and in the opening bout, Lou Yu Long stopped Liu Ding Hui in three rounds.
The fights were held at the Wansheng Binjiang Rd Venue in Chongqing and officiated by the Professional Boxing Commission of China. This was the first day of a back to back title fight card promoted by SECA and TOP RANK.
