In a classic heavyweight fight, the Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury WBC heavyweight championship ended in a split draw where Fury dominated most of the rounds but Wilder scored two knockdowns to somehow level up the match to the eyes of the judges at the Staples Center Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). Wilder retained his WBC title while Fury went home with his RING lineal belt intact.

Judge Alejandro Rochin had it 115-111 for Wilder, Robert Tapper had it 114-110 for Fury and Phil Edwards had it 113-113 even. PhilBoxing had it 114-112 for Fury.

Fury controlled the whole fight with his stinging jabs and perpetual motion that seemed to confuse Wilder who failed to land his patented powerful right -- until finally in the 9th round, Wilder connected with a right to the head of Fury who went down for the first time. Fury survived the round as Wilder tried to finish him.

Fury, now seemed recovered, connected with a combination early in the 10th and followed it up with a left upper cut which end as Fury's dominant round including a big round he logged in the 7th round. Not much dramatic action in the 11th until Wilder connected with another hard right to the head of Fury and followed it up with a wicked left to the jaw that sent Fury again to the canvas in what appeared he was out of his senses. As veteran referee Jack Reiss was nearing the count of eight, Fury, displaying a lot of heart, stood up to beat the count. Wilder tried to finish Fury up but the Briton connected with a hard right and left counter that backed up the American until the fight drew to a close.

Wilder logged a first blemish in his record with the draw and dropped to 40 wins, 1 draw with 39 knockouts while Fury also logged a draw in his record, 27-0, 1 draw.

Wilder won the WBC heavyweight title in 2017 against Bername Stiverne successfully defended it seven times. Fury won the WBA, WBO, IBF, IBO heavyweight titles by defeating long time champion Wladimir Klitschko on Nov. 28, 2015 but failed to defend it. Fury had a roller-coaster emotional ride after titles where he was on the top of the world but then became an alcoholic, taking drugs, bloating his body to the point of, according to him, suicide, and then coming back again to win his comeback fights against Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta this year. Fury's titles are now being held by fellow Briton Anthony Joshua.

It seemed the rematch will more likely take place to have another dose of another classic encounter between two top heavyweights of the world.
