It was another eventful weekend for Philippine boxing capped by one highly-anticipated world title fight.
Milan Melindo challenged WBC light flyweight champion Ken Shiro of Japan today in Yokohama. The taller Shiro used his jab effectively and eventually bloodied Melido, who had facial scars from cuts from past ring wars. One of them was bound to open up again.
The ring physician recommended the fight stoppage due to the cut over Milan?s left eye in the seventh round. Before the fight was stopped Shiro was backing Melindo to the ropes. The Japanese also had the faster hands and was leading 59-55 on all three judges? cards when Referee Laurence Cole called a halt to the bout.
Shiro remains undefeated at 14-0,8KO?s. This was the fourth defense of his title that he won from Mexican Ganigan Lopez.
Melindo (37-413KO?s) is a former IBF world light flyweight champion. He lost in a unification bout last December to WBA champ Ryoichi Taguchi by unanimous decision in a fight also held in Japan.
Melindo is one of the headliners of ALA Promotions and lost in previous attempts to win a world title in 2013 against WBO/WBA flyweight champ Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico in Macao and in 2015 against another Mexican Javier Mendoza for the IBF light flyweight title.
In 2017, Melindo captured the IBF world title when he stopped Japanese Akira Yaegashi in one round in Tokyo.
NERY STOPS CANOY
Jason Canoy could not come up with an upset in Tijuana, Mexico and succumbed to the more powerful former world titleholder Luis Nery.
Nery decked Canoy in round one. The boxer from the Omega Gym of Cebu courageously got up and fought back. He landed rights of his own but it did not faze the Mexican one bit. Canoy was willing to stand in front and trade with Neri but in the third round, he was knocked down again. He got up but was pinned on the ropes and received another hard volley prompting the referee to stop the fight.
They were fighting for the WBC Silver bantamweight title
Nery remains unbeaten at 27-0,21KO?s. He is known for dethroning Shinsuke Yamanaka for the WBC bantamweight title last year and also in their rematch. In between Nery had a positive for a banned substance that the WBC eventually ruled as coming from contaminated food. Nery has also beaten many Filipino boxers like Arthur Villanueva, Raymund Tabugon, Richie Mepranum, John Mark Apolinario and Jether Oliva.
Canoy, now 27-9-2,19KO?s, was stopped for the first time in his career. His biggest win was a first round TKO victory over former WBA Interim world titleholder Drian Francisco three years ago.
MACKENZIE DOWNS BERNALDEZ
Last Friday in Australia, Mark Bernaldez knocked down Kye MacKenzie in the fifth round but the Aussie survived and stopped Bernaldez in the seventh round. Their fight was for the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title.
Bernaldez suffered his second career loss and is now 17-2,12KO?s. He fights out of the Sanman Gym of Gen.Santos City. MacKenzie is now 20-1,17KO?s.
