MANDAUE CITY, CEBU ? Undefeated prospect Christian Araneta closed the show in bone-chilling fashion when he decked Jerry Tomogdan with a left uppercut in the twelfth and final round to win the vacant WBC ABCO Silver light flyweight title.
It was a tight contest in the early rounds. Tomogdan was no slouch, having fought for a world title three years ago against WBC minimumweight world champion Chayaphon Moonsri of Thailand.
Both southpaws landed hard shots but Araneta had the edge in power and shook Tomogdan on a few occasions with hard one-two combos. But Tomogdan readily fired back. Araneta had Tomogdan reeling in the third but he survived and came back for more.
The open scoring rules of the WBC was applied and after four rounds, one judge had it 38-38, two had Araneta ahead 39-37. Araneta?s cornermen instructed him to chose his spots and not to engage in a wild brawl. He pulled away in the scoring but Tomogdan was still dangerous and hurt Araneta with hard rib shots.
Araneta was ahead after the eighth round and once again hurt Tomogdan in the ninth, but later in the round Tomogdan recovered and blasted Araneta to the ropes. Knowing he was behind, Tomogdan staged a rally in the tenth and eleventh rounds. Furious exchanges sent the crowd roaring.
Tomogdan lie flat on the canvas as Araneta goes to the neutral corner.
Then in the dying seconds of the 12th, a right followed by a hard left uppercut to Tomogdan?s jaw sent him crashing down to the canvas. Blood streamed from his nose as he lied down flat on the canvas. He was attended to by medical personal at ringside. Tomogdan recovered his senses and was able to converse and stand up and walk out of the ring on his own. Official time 2:58.
Supervising for the WBC was Damrong Simakajornboon of Thailand.
Araneta, who fights out of the Omega Gym of Cebu, is now 16-0, 14KO?s.
Tomogdan drops to 25-10-4,13KO?s. He lost by ninth round KO in Bangkok to Moonsri in his WBC world title shot but bounced back last year by beating Japanese Riku Kano by sixth round knockout for the WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight title.
Jaber Zayani (L) and Euardo Mancito.
In the main supporting bout, Jaber Zayani of France beat Filipino Eduardo Mancito by split decision for the WBO Oriental junior lightweight title. Mancito was outgunned in the early going but was not hurt. Zayani dropped Mancito in the seventh round but Mancito staged a late round rally to make things more interesting.
The scores ? Edgar Olalo (95-94) and Edward Ligas (96-93) for Zayani while Edwin Barrientos has it 96-93 for Mancito. The referee was Atty Danrex Tapdasan.
Supervising for the WBO was WBO VP Leon Panoncillo.
Zayani remains unbeaten in fifteen bouts with eight KO?s. Aside from his native France, he has seen action in Canada, Thailand, Mexico, and the U.S.
Mancito is now 16-9-2,9KO?s. He previously lost to quality opponents like Rey Vargas and Tomas Rojas.
For the rest of the card- Kawelo Alcos of Hawaii beat Patrick dela Cruz by majority decision, Joebert Alvarez won by split decision over Gerpaul Valero, Ponciano Rimandiman beat Adrian Lerasan by seventh round TKO, Marjun Piencenaves got a unanimous verdict over Jeffrey Stella and Carlo Bacaro stopped Matthew Fondales at 2:07 of round one.
The card billed as DOUBLE RUMBLE was promoted by Omega Pro Sports and Championship Boxing Development Philippines. The fights were held Saturday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
