Carl Jammes Martin remained unbeaten and retained the WBO Oriental Youth bantamweight title when Huerban Qiatehe of China decided not to answer the bell for the seventh round.
Both boxers were tentative during the opening minute but a quick right hook from the southpaw Martin sent Qiatehe down in the opening round. It seemed to hit the Chinese boxer at the back of the head but was ruled a knockdown. When Qiatehe got up Martin tagged him with hard shots.
In the second round, a flurry of punches sent Qiatehe down again. He got up but Martin continued with his two-fisted attack. Qiatehe was sent to the canvas again. It seemed like he would not survive the round but he did.
Qiatehe was still game in the subsequent rounds but Martin?s edge in power and volume was evident. Martin tried to finish him and landed blows in brutal succession.
After the sixth round however, Qiatehe?s cornerman signaled the referee that his boxer has had enough.
Martin is now 10W-0L,9KO?s. He hails from Lagawe, Ifugao and was making the first defense of the belt he acquired last April when he stopped Tanzanian Hashimu Zuberi in two rounds at the Lagawe Central School Gym.
Qiatehe fights in the ?Major League Boxing? series in China, a grassroots boxing tournament formerly known as the ?League of Fists? which is promoted by SECA and TOP RANK. Qiatehe drops to 7W-2L-2D, 2KO?s.
This fight was held Monday at the Plaza Bayombong in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya and broadcast live online. The WBO supervisor was Antonio Comia.
