CEBU CITY -- Consensus world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr yesterday hovered just around the flyweight limit, coming in at 113 lbs after workout as he gears up for his December 1 title defense against Mexican Luis Maldonado at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
"I feel really, really great. We are just about to wrap up training here in Cebu. But I'm now 100 percent ready to rumble," said Donaire yesterday, moments after coming out of the offices of sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, owner of the ALA gym, which has been the champion's training camp for a month now.
Donaire, who will go into the fight wearing the Arthro trunks, did not report to the gym yesterday due to the severe typhoon that hit Cebu, but nonetheless ran on the treadmill and hit the mitts for full twelve rounds.
"We are now at 100 percent. His jab and his hooks have been causing me problems and muscle pains," said Nonito Sr, the champion's father and trainer. The elder Donaire later downplayed possible jetlag and early peaking, saying his son is just within manageable weight situation.
The father-and-son team is expected to fly out of Cebu on Saturday, and depart for San Francisco in the evening where they plan to spend the weekend, and on to Connecticut on Monday.
Donaire has been sparring in Cebu against RP champs Rocky Fuentes and Michael Domingo, as well as Louie Bantigue and Weng Haya.
"I've had the best sparring available. I've had the best training facilities at the ALA Gym. Expect only the best when I perform," added the reigning IBF and IBO flyweight champion.
Solar Sports and GMA-7 will air the fight live on December 2 (RP time).
