BOGO CITY, CEBU ? Hometown favorite Joe Noynay and Mexican challenger Hector Garcia gave the sell-out crowd a night to remember when they engaged in a spine-tingling battle until the final bell.

Noynay, who was defending his WBO Asia Pacific Youth junior lightweight title for the first time, started with a torrid pace, firing power shots to the body and face. But Garcia fired back in the middle of the opening round with hard right hands.

They traded hooks at close range in the second round then Garcia unleashed hell by pinning Noynay on the ropes on several occasions. Garcia showed he was the stereotypical Mexican pressure fighter and punished Noynay in the third when he got in close.

Noynay?s cornermen pleaded him to move in the fourth round, and Noynay was more effective at a distance. But Garcia continued to press forward despite being at the receiving end of one-two combos from the Bogo native.

The subsequent rounds saw back and forth action with Noynay trying to put some sanity by boxing and moving but Garcia would not have any of it and continued to bang every chance he got. Both showed they could take a punch.

The home fans yelled themselves hoarse. Noynay?s uppercut was on target but Garcia took it well in the eighth. Garcia was bleeding from the nose in the endgame but this did not slow him down and continued to bring the fight to Noynay.

The action was halted for low blows and in a moment of confusion, in the ninth, Garcia got sucker punched when he turned his back from Noynay when Referee Tony Pesons already signaled that the action would continue. A reminder for boxers to protect themselves at all times.

But Garcia immediately shook it off and both continued to trade even when fatigue visibly was kicking in. In the tenth and final round, they left everything inside the ring. A clash of heads left a long gash above Garcia?s right eyebrow before the final bell sounded. Noynay was steadier and more accurate in the last two rounds which gave him the sight edge in the scorecards.

Judges Edward Ligas and Edgar Olalo had it 96-94, Salven Lagumbay 95-95. Noynay retains his WBO regional belt by majority decision and Garcia got a well-deserved ovation and respect from the fans.

Supervising for the WBO was WBO VP for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo.

For the undercards:

Cris Alfante beat Ryan Tampus who chose not to answer the bell for the seventh round, Al Toyogon knocked out Jason Tinampay in one round with a body punch, Alvin Madura won by split decision over Lobert Bayo, Justin Darap got a majority decision win over Ronel Sumalpong, Richard Sueno beat Jeco Suico by TKO in the fourth round, Cris Paulino won against Marvin Tampus who chose not to answer the bell for the second round and in the distaff side, Machieka Pareno beat Jean De Paz by unanimous decision.

The fights were sanctioned and officiated by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) led by Chairman Abraham Mitra.

The card billed as for Honor and Pride was held at the Don Celestino Martinez, Snr Sports and Cultural Center and promoted by Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde.
