Reymart Gaballo - one of the best prospects most Filipinos have never heard of - gave the country another title belt when he bested Stephon Young of the U.S. in their duel of unbeaten boxers for the interim WBA world bantamweight title.

Gaballo won a unanimous decision in a fight held Saturday morning (Philippine Time) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The hard punching Gaballo, who fights out of the Sanman Gym of Gen.Santos City, was fighting abroad for the third time and already had back to back TKO victories in Hawaii and Mexico against Ernesto Guerrero and Ulises Rivero respectively.

Going into this fight, Young held a record of 17-0-3,7KO?s and had the regional WBA-NABA belt.

The scorecards read 117-110,117-110 and 118-109.

Gaballo showed raw power but needed polish in his fights in the Philippines, most of which were held in Gen. Santos City. But he showed a lot of improvement under the tutelage of Cuban coach Moro Fernandez, who trains Gaballo and other Sanman boxers in Miami, Florida.

The last time Gaballo?s fight went to the scorecards was in 2015, in his seventh pro bout. His record is now 19W-0L,16KO?s. The 21 year old Gaballo previously held the regional WBC ABCO superbantamwieght belt.

Gaballo?s statement to his countrymen, ?I am very happy to be a world champion. I kept my word and beat him. Thank God and thanks to my team.?
