CEBU ? The historic all-Filipino world title fight between IBF superfly champion Jerwin Ancajas and mandatory challenger Jonas Sultan originally scheduled on the undercard of the Jeff Horn vs Terence Crawford WBO welterweight showdown at the Mandalay Bay Resorts Hotel in Las Vegas on April 14 has been canceled on that date and will be moved to a later date after Crawford injured his hand.
ESPN's Dan Rafael broke the story earlier today.
"He hurt his hand hitting a guy on top of the head gear," Arum told Rafael. "We've gotten him treated by the best hand doctors. He had an MRI, and there is no ligament tear, thank God. The doctor prescribed two weeks of rest, and then he should be ready to go. We'll put the fight sometime in late May or early June, but that depends on how Terence's hand is feeling."
ALA Promotions CEO Michael Aldeguer who promotes Sultan, confirmed the postponement. ?We got a message early this morning [PH time Thursday], it will be moved either May 12, late May or June 2. We should know the new date in the next few days,? Aldeguer informed Philboxing.
May 12 is the Jorge Linares-Vasyl Lomachenko card at the Madison Square Garden in New York while late May or June 2 are the target dates for the rescheduled Horn-Crawford fight.
Aldeguer also informed that they have just signed the Ancajas-Sultan fight contract Wednesday and was fully set for April 14 bout until Thursday morning's quick reversal.
The Ancajas-Sultan tussle is the first world championship fight between two Filipinos in 93 years after Filipino hall of famer Pacho Villa (Francisco Villaruel Guilledo) defended his world flyweight title against Clever Sencio at the Wallace Field (present day Luneta Park) in Manila on May 2, 1925.
