Toto Landero

Pontevedra, Negros Occidental native Toto Landero has earned a world title shot against WBA world minimumweight champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong popularly known as Knockout CP Freshmart scheduled on March 3 in Chonburi, Thailand.

Landero thus becomes the sixth Filipino fighter to fight for a world title in the first quarter of this year joining Mercito Gesta, Jerwin Ancajas, Brian Viloria, Donnie Nietes and Ernesto Salulong.

Gesta will challenge WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares of Venezuela this Saturday (Sunday morning in Manila), Jan. 27, at The Forum in Ingglewood, California; Ancajas will defend his IBF super flyweight title against Israel Gonzalez of Mexico next weekend, Feb. 3, at the Bank of Americal Center in Corpus Christi, Texas; Viloria and Nietes will be part of HBO's 'Superly 2' event at The Forum in Ingglewood, CA on Feb. 24 where Viloria will fight for the vacant WBA world flyweight title against Artem Dalakian of Ukraine and Nietes will defend his IBF flyweight title against mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Reveco of Argentina; and Ernesto Saulong of Mindoro will challenge IBF super bantamweight champion Ryosuke Iwasa of Japan on Mar. 1 in Kokugina, Japan.

In last year's scorecard, 11 Filipinos were involved in 15 world title fights, registering 6 wins and 9 losses. From five world champions at the beginning of the year (Manny Pacquiao, Donnie Nietes, Jerwin Ancajas, Marlon Tapales, Milan Melindo) only two retained their belts at the end of the year (Nietes and Ancajas). Melindo fought three world title fights, winning two and losing one and his title at year's end; Ancajas fought three times defending his title winning all of them; Nietes fought only once and won to retain his belt; Pacquiao dropped his title losing to Jeff Horn of Australia while Tapales lost his title on the scales. Those who failed to capture a world title as challengers were Melvin Jerusalem, Joey Canoy, Jason Canoy, Rey Loreto, Ryan Ray Ponteras and Genesis Servania.

Landero, 22, sports a record of 10 wins, 1 loss and a draw. The biggest win of his career so far was against former world title challenger Vic Saludar whom he defeated by split decision on June 10, 2017 in Mandaue City. Ranked No. 14 by the WBA, Landero was picked by the undefeated Niyomtrong as his challenger probably considering the Filipino as a soft opponent.

Niyomtrong (16-0-0, 7KOs) won the Interim WBA world minimumweight title by defeating many time world title challenger Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua. Niyomtrong then captured the regular WBA minimumweight title by defeating Byron Roxas, also of Nicaragua, on June 29, 2016 and has successfully defended it three times since, the last one against Rey Loreto of the Philippines on June 15, 2017.
