CEBU ? Jason Canoy of the Omega Gym of Cebu will try his luck on the road once again this February 8 when he is pitted against WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight titleholder Hiroaki Teshigawara at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

The 27 year old Canoy (27W-7L-2D,19KO?s) fought for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) world title last year against Mzuvukile Magwaca last year and lost by split decision in South Africa.

Canoy is known for his crowd pleasing all action style here in Cebu. Most of his loses actually happened in overseas bouts in Russia, Ukraine, Japan and Thailand. He has however, gained valuable experience in Japan having been tapped several times to be a sparring partner over there including being part of the training camp of two division WBO world champ Naoya Inoue.

Canoy talked with this writer Thursday about his experience fighting for a world title on foreign soil. ?The ring was very slippery in South Africa.? Canoy said, ?I had difficulty getting leverage for my punches. I scored a knockdown that was ruled a slip.?

Canoy has since shook off the spilt verdict loss and beat Renerio Arizala by unanimous decision last October in Mandaue City. He is around eight pounds above the bantamweight limit but he feels comfortable that he is hovering around this weight.

?I know I can lose the weight gradually,? he said, ?It?s better that way. I have yet to reach twelve rounds in my sparring, but once I reach twelve, I know I will be near my fighting weight. ? Canoy is training hard under the watchful eyes of Omega trainers Jingjing Tepora and Julius Erving Junco.

The 27 year old Teshigawara (15W-2L-2D,9KO?s) won the regional title last October against a Filipino, Jetro Pabustan, by TKO in the tenth round. Another Filipino that lost to Teshigawara by TKO is Junny Salogaol.
