The dynamic Games and Amusements Board chairman Abraham Mitra has been lauded by the WBO executive committee during the organization's 30th annual convention aboard the 'Norwegian Sky' in the Bahamas last week of October for his novel effort to help Filipino boxers of their boxing medical requirements for free that could become a blueprint for other boxing commissions in other parts of the world to follow.

Mitra had signed an agreement with the Department of Health of the Philippines under Secretary Paulyn Rosell-Ubial last August that will be implemented starting on Nov. 4 to allow Filipino professional boxers to be tested for free for ECG, chest X-Ray, complete blood count, urinalysis and drug testing and if necessary, CT-Scan or MRI. This will significantly help the Philippines' more than 1,000 professional boxers for the renewal of their licenses with the GAB.

During the last day of the 30th WBO convention, WBO vice-president for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo Jr had informed the executive committee members about this development to which Mitra later explained the details of the agreement. Mitra offered to furnish the WBO a copy of the agreement and to assist in drawing a framework for other commissions around the world to implement similar programs to which the committee members were highly appreciative.

Also in photos are, frontrow, Kenneth Rontal and his father Florskie Rontal; backrow, Referee Danrex Tapdasan, Rossel Mitra, Liza Elorde and Johnny Elorde.

Mitra, who was seen participating in all of the convention's activities especially the officials' seminars, also took it upon himself to recommend Filipino boxers to be ranked favorably by the WBO even as Filipino managers and promoters of these boxers did not attend the current WBO convention or the previous conventions. Mitra, who officially sent a recommendation letter to the WBO for rankings of Filipino boxers, stood up during the ratings committee discussion to speak for Filipino boxers. This is the first time that a GAB chairman had represented the Filipino boxers in any convention which could result in a sizable number of Filipino boxers to populate the WBO world rankings in the lower weights.

Expected to prominently occupy the rankings are Robert Paradero, Vic Saludar, Mark Anthony Barriga and Jerry Tomogdan at mini-flyweights; Jonathan Taconing, Vince Paras, Christian Araneta at junior flyweights; Froilan Saludar and Giemel Magramo at flyweights; Aston Palicte, Jonas Sultan and Rene Dacquel at junior bantamweight; Jethro Pabustan and Mark Anthony Geraldo at bantamweight; Marlon Tapales, Nonito Donaire Jr and Juan Miguel Elorde at junior featherweight; Mark Magsayo and Jhack Tepora at featherweight; Juan Martin Elorde at junior lightweight; and Manny Pacquiao at welterweight.

Upon returning back to the Philippines first week of November, Mitra immediately got back to work as he was hosting the 55th OPBF annual convention on Nov 9 to 12 to be held at the Princesa Garden Island Resort in his native Palawan.
