After extensively training at the ALA Gym at Mandaue, Cebu, WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion, Arthur Villanueva and his Team, Coach Edito Villamor and Coach Michael Domingo landed in LA yesterday to resume training at the famed Wildcard Gym along Vine Street in Hollywood, CA.

The Team came ahead of Villanueva?s scheduled 10 round non-title fight with Luis Nery, (24-0-0, 18KO) the WBC Bantamweight champion at the champion?s home court ? the GasMart Stadium, Tijuana, Mexico on November 4th.

Nery is not a stranger to Filipino boxers. He fought and defeated all of them, including Jether Oliva, John Mark Apolinario, Raymund Tabugon and Richie Mepranum. But Nery hasn?t fought a guy with the caliber of Arthur Villanueva.

Therefore, Nery will not be staking his WBC belt. We believe WBC and Team Nery are not so sure if he can handle Villanueva so they will treat the fight as a tune up fight to assure that he keeps his belt no matter what the outcome of the fight with Villanueva will be.

Villanueva on the other hand is all gung-ho for the fight. He sees the opportunity to fight the WBC champion as a stepping-stone to another title fight that looms in the horizon.

Villanueva sports an impressive record of 31-2-0, 17 KO. Villanueva?s two losses where both during world title fights, to McJoe Arroyo and to Zolani Tete.

Aware of that situation, Villanueva has learned his lessons, albeit sour lessons. Although he never had any setbacks in his previous training for world title fights, this time around he is making doubly sure that he is not leaving any stones unturned. He diligently trained at Cebu and he put his dues at the Wildcard Gym.

In addition, he made sure that all his gear is in top shape including a custom made mouthguard. Villanueva came to this writer?s dental office way after office hours on a special appointment to get a mouthguard fitted. Upon seeing his new mouthguard with the Philippine colors, his eyes lit up. ? It compliments my colors for the fight?, he said to this writer, and ?I sure hope it will bring me the same good luck as the one you made me when I fought Juan Jimenez at the Stub Hub Center last year?, he added.

So be it King Arthur. So be it!

Team Villanueva (L-R): Edito Villamor, Villanueva, Dr Ed de la Vega and Michael Domingo.
