Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin vs. Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez did not disappoint. It wasn?t Hagler-Hearns but fans certainly would want to see a rematch. There was a lot of Internet chatter going into the fight and the scoreline certainly created more noise on social media.
The fight had the kind of back and forth action that fans love and both boxers exhibited an iron chin which made the fight more compelling.
GGG was the aggressor through most of the fight and he made his assertive intentions known when the opening bell sounded. Canelo used his lateral movement and landed crisp counters to the body and including a sublime uppercut.
But GGG successfully pinned Canelo on the ropes and landed heavy right hands that would have knocked down cattle. Canelo?s solid jaw enabled him to weather the storm and the action continued to heat up going into the halfway mark, with the protagonists trading volley after volley.
Golovkin?s pressure and power dominated the middle rounds but Alvarez?s counterpunching and body shots made him stay in the fight.
They continued trading hard shots and countering counters but GGG?s offensive and punch output enabled him to pull away going into the homestretch. GGG also demonstrated that he could take a punch when Canelo made a last ditch stand but it seemed Golovkin did enough to pull this one off.
The three judges at ringside at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas scored it a split draw ? Adalaide Byrd ? 118-110 for Alvarez, Dave Moretti ? 115-113 for Golovkin, and Don Trella had it 114-114
All three had Canelo winning the last three rounds but the wide margin of Byrd?s scorecard is a trending topic among boxing fans on their favorite social networking sites.
This writer had it 115-113 for Golovkin.
Golovkin kept his WBA, WBC, IBF AND IBO middleweight belts. He has held portions of the world middleweight championship since 2010. Alvarez previously reigned in the junior middleweight division winning belts with the WBA,WBC and WBO. He also previously held the WBC middleweight title.
Golovkin and Alvarez acquitted themselves well in this fight. With both wanting a rematch, we can even look forward to a trilogy.
