CEBU CITY ? An elite batch of Mindanao born prospects will showcase their abilities in the country's hotbed of boxing in 'Enkwentro sa Mandaue: Visayas vs Mindanao' to be held at the Mandaue City Sports & Cultural Complex on June 10. This was announced by promoter Kenneth Rontal of Championship Boxing Development of the Philippines in a press conference held at the Abuhan Restaurant Thursday to launch the event.
Heading the cast is Polomolok, South Cotabato boxer Vic Saludar, a one-time world title challenger and his older brother Froilan Saludar, a former WBO regional belt titleholder; undefeated General Santos City sensation Vince Paras and another undefeated crowd pleaser Robert Paradero who is from Bukidnon. Although the Saludar brothers have already seen action in Cebu, it will be the first time for Paras and Paradero to fight outside the island of Mindanao.
Vic Saludar (14-2-0, 9KOs), rated No. 2 by the WBO and who previously fought and lost to Japanese Kosei Tanaka for the WBO world minimumweight title, will face Toto Landero (8-1-2, 2KOs) for 10-rounds minimumweight contest. Froilar Saludar (24-2-1, 15KOs) will face Omega Gym's prospect Salatiel Amit (10-2-2, 7KOs) for 10-rounds flyweight bout.
Highly regarded prospect Vince Paras (10-0-0, 9KOs) whose fighting style is reminiscent of his townmate Manny Pacquiao when Pacquiao was just starting up, will face another Omega Gym prospect Jimboy Haya (10-3-2, 6KOs) for the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific Youth light flyweight title scheduled for 10 rounds.
Robert Paradero (13-0-0, 8KOs) will match wits with wily veteran journeyman Fabio Marfa (25-33-4, 12KOs) for 10 rounds light flyweight bout. Promoter Rontal revealed that Paradero has always been the darling of the crowd wherever he goes because of his fighting style.
To cap the night, Rontal will be bringing in a special attraction in Hawaiian woman boxer Casey Morton (4-0-3, 0KOs) who will face Thai woman boxer Phannaluk Kongsang (0-2-0, 0KOs) for 6 rounds super flyweight contest.
?We would like to expand the horizons of our boxers. To expose them to a new audience. We decided to bring them to Cebu because we know it is here that fans know their boxing,? Rontal said. ?Also we promise our audience to get their money's worth because our fighters are evenly matched with fighters from other stables.?
WBO vice-president for Asia-Pacific region Leon Panoncillo Jr was also on hand to support the coming event.
?I have a Visayan blood so I wholehearted support events like these and I hope one of these boxers here will become a world champion some day,? Panoncillo said who pointed out the importance for boxers to fight for a regional title belt so they can be rated at the Top 15 of the world rankings.
Panoncillo also said that although Paras, who will fight Jimboy Haya for the WBO Youth title, ?has a very impressive undefeated record, it remains to be seen if he can deliver if he fights a really good fighter because I have seen Haya fight and he is very good.?
