Osaka, Japan ? Filipino world bantamweight champion Marlon 'The Nightmare' Tapales failed to make weight on his first try and in danger of being stripped of his title during the official weighin at the Hotel Monterey here Saturday at 1 p.m. ahead of his title defense against local boy Shoehei Omori Sunday night at the Edion Arena.

Tapales, who was a pound over as he woke up here today, inexplicably stepped the scales at 54.3 kilos (119.75 lbs) even after stripping his underwear, one pound and three-fourth over the 118 lbs bantamweight limit. Omori came in at a comfortable 53.3 kilos (117.5 lbs) half a pound under. Tapales has been given two hours to make the contracted weight otherwise he will be stripped of his title under the WBO championship rules.

Tapales, who stayed in his hotel trying to reduce, also failed to attend the elaborate press conference that started late waiting for him scheduled one hour ahead of the weighin at 1 pm. It left Tapales's manager Rex 'Wakee' Salud to issue apologies to the WBO and WBA officials and Japanese media for Tapales's no show.

In the other world title fight scheduled for tomorrow, local boy WBA world flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka, making his 6th title defense, weighed in at the flyweight limit of 112 lbs while his Thai challenger Noknoi Sitthiprasert also came in at 112 lbs.

Stay tuned for the next update ...
