Romero Duno defied the odds and emerged as the next heavy hitter of the Sanman Gym of Gen. Santos City. Duno dropped the erstwhile unbeaten Christian ?Chimpa? Gonzalez with a short right in the opening round, just a split second after Gonzalez landed a right hand that sent Duno to the ropes.

Gonzalez was aggressive and had Duno on the back foot in the opening seconds of the fight. The crowd inside the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles also were cheering for Chimpa.

Gonzalez got up on unsteady legs and was somewhat fortunate the first knockdown happened in the dying seconds of the round.

But in the second round, Duno landed a right hook, once again while trading power shots with Gonzalez which sent him down.

Gonzalez once again got up but his legs were unable to hold him up and he fell while the referee was counting prompting the stoppage. He was attended to by the medical personnel at ringside while Team Sanman celebrated.

In Duno?s corner was trainer Rodel Mayol, a former WBC light flyweight champion, Sanman CEO Jim Claude Mananquil, Sanman CFO Dexter Tan and philboxing?s Dr.Ed dela Vega.

Duno?s victory brought back memories of his stablemate Randy Petalcorin?s twin stoppage wins in China against Walter Tello and Ma Yi Ming. It was also reminiscent of three hard-hitting Gen.Santos City fighter ? Rolando Navarette, Marvin Sonsona and Manny Pacquiao.

Duno is now 13W-1L, 12KO?s while Gonzalez drops to 16W-1L,14KO?s. The fight was for the vacant WBC Youth Intercontinental lightweight title.

The 21 year old Duno suffered his only career loss in Russia last year by unanimous decision against Mikhail Alexeev.
