GEN. SANTOS CITY ? It was a battle that made the boxers dig in deep and the crowd stand and roar in excitement. Young prospects Jade Bornea and Raul Yu had a tentative start but Yu?s length gave Bornea a little bit of trouble in the opening round.
Bornea, representing Gensan?s Sanman/Amoy boxing stable, shifted his stance to southpaw in the second round and landed effectively with his right hook. Bornea continued to fight left handed in the third when it was obvious that Yu had no trouble handling him when he shifted back to an orthodox stance.
In the 4th, a cut opened on Bronea?s left eyebrow and Yu, representing Cebu?s ALA gym, saw his chance and cornered and pummeled him on the ropes. Yu continued to press the action in the fifth round and it took Bornea near the end of the fifth to mount an offense.
But it was still anybody?s fight past the halfway mark. In the sixth, cheered on by the home crowd, Bornea counterattacked but Yu remained aggressive.
Yu?s edge in power was evident in the seventh, when he landed at will against a retreating Bornea. But Bornea?s corner managed to control his cut, which would become crucial in the endgame.
Early in the eighth round, a clash of heads opened a gash on Yu?s right eyebrow. The ring doctor allowed the fight to continue and the cut bled profusely obstructing his vision.
Yu became a much easier target and Bronea jumped on his chance and pummeled Yu till the end of the round.
Blood continued to pour from Yu?s cut, which was wider than Bornea?s in the ninth and tenth rounds. With Yu?s vision obstructed, Bornea scored at will. Bornea?s left straight landed cleanly in the championship rounds which gave him the victory.
Judges scores ? Romy Fordaliza and Jaime Mata ? 97-93, Lito delos Reyes ? 98-92. Bornea was awarded the IBF Youth super flyweight title belt by IBF supervisor Fritz Gaston.
?This was my toughest fight as a professional,? the 21 year old Bornea told this writer after the bout. He goes up to 7W-0L, 4KO?s.

Jade Bornea interviewed on Solar Sports after his win.
?I thought I already had it won before the cut,? the 22 year old Yu said after the fight, and also lamenting on the cut. He drops to his second loss at 9W-2L-2D,8KO?s.
Sanman boxers Ben Mananquil, Lolito and Eden Sonsona swept their WBF title bouts. Details and complete undercard results to follow.
This fight was held on Sunday February 26 at the Lagao Gym of Gen.Santos City and presented by Sanman Promotions. It will be shown on a delayed basis on Solar Sports. ?Laban Pinoy 3: Rise of the Champions? was the official boxing event of this year?s Kalilangan Festival. It is sponsored by Sen. Manny Pacquiao, the city government of Gensan, Mt. Sabrina Resort, Barberlife and Amoy Promotions.
POST SCRIPT:
This writer also scored it for Bornea but had it much closer at 96-94 with the last three rounds being the momentum change of the fight.
I also would like to repeat my opinion from a previous article about top Filipino boxing prospects side stepping each other for the past few years. This fight was an exception rather than the rule in local boxing. But it was an excellent fight and it showed the high quality of our prospects.
We hope to see more match-ups like this one in the coming months and maybe we will finally see two Filipinos fight for a world title, something that we have not seen since 1925 between Pancho Villa and Clever Sencio.
