CEBU ? Games & Amusements Board (GAB) chairman Abraham Mitra has scheduled a dialogue with boxing promoters, managers and ring officials on Nov. 26 at its Cebu GAB office at DBP Building along Jones Ave. this city, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Mitra, together with GAB commissioners Edward Trinidad and Matthew Gaston, will be in town on the occasion of the Milan Melindo vs Fahlan Sakkreerin IBF interim world junior flyweight championship on Nov. 26 to be held at the historic Cebu Coliseum.
The upcoming dialogue in Cebu is part of Mitra's continuing program to improve the operations of the agency by directly talking to the industry stakeholders. Mitra already had a dialogue with boxing stakeholders in Luzon and will also schedule one such dialogue in Davao City for the Mindanao promoters, managers and officials.
Mitra, in an earlier Philboxing interview, has vowed to improve the image of the GAB and seeks to implement regulations that would help the Philippine boxing industry as a whole.
Among the changes the GAB chairman have been working on are the following.
- longer period of licenses for officials and boxers
- regularly put updated boxer's rankings on the GAB website
- invite representatives from promoters and media to sit in the Ratings Committee
- strict screening of boxers who fight outside the country
- rotation of assignment of officials in boxing matches
- set up a program to recruit new judges and referees
- to give heroes welcome to boxers winning championships
- look into the possibility of employing professional boxers in the navy or army
?I want to hear directly from the boxing community on how to improve the industry. We want to be as transparent as possible,? Mitra said.
Mitra also informed that there will be a Philippine boxing convention next year, with the date and venue have yet to be decided. ?The budget for the convention was already approved by Congress, thanks to Congressman Nograles,? Mitra said.
