SHANGHAI, CHINA - Veteran referees from the Professional Boxing Commission (PBC),International conducted a seminar for aspiring referees last Saturday inside the Xianxia Tennis Center in Shanghai. The venue also served as the site for three straight fight dates for the launching of season three of the League of Fists professional boxing tournament.
International referees Atty. Danrex Tapdasan of the Philippines and Sawaeng Thaweekoon of Thailand were ably assisted by two other veteran referees from Thailand, Surat Soikrachang and Mekin Sumon. The participants of the lecture were PBCC judges, timekeepers and other boxing officials who wanted to learn the basics of being a referee for professional boxing.
They lectured on the rules, signals and proper movement and position inside the ring. Ring safety and coordination with the fight supervisor, officials table and the ring doctor were also emphasized. The participants were given a chance to move around the ring and referee simulated fight situations. They were also given tips on how to move properly while conserving their energy inside the ring.
The Professional Boxing Commission got its start officiating big fights held in Macao more than three years ago. WBO VP for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo served as the main adviser of the group. The organization has since branched into mainland China, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, the U.A.E, India and New Zealand.
