CRAWFORD IS WBO FIGHTER OF THE YEAR; DONAIRE-JUAREZ IS WBO FIGHT OF THE YEAR

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- WBO and WBC super lightweight world champion Terence 'Bud' Crawford of Omaha, Nebraska, was awarded 'Fighter of the Year' by the WBO during the Gala Dinner and Awards Night as it closed its 29th Annual Convention held at the Caribe Hilton here Thursday. Crawford, who was awarded WBO's most promising boxer at last year's convention in Orlando, Florida, captured the WBO super lightweight title by stopping Dierry Jean on Oct. 24, 2015; successfully defended it against Henry Lundy on Feb. 27, 2016 and then unified the title against WBC super lightweight champion Victor Postol on July 23, 2016.

Meanwhile the WBO super bantamweight world title fight between five-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr of the Philippines and Cesar Juarez of Mexico held at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum here on Dec. 11, 2015, that saw Donaire dominating the Mexican early in the fight but turned into a life and death struggle for the Filipino with Juarez came back strong in the second half of the fight, was adjudged the WBO fight of the year. Top Rank vice-president Carl Morreti (photo) accepted the award for Donaire.
