NANNING, CHINA ? The fans who packed the Guangxi Sports Center Gymnasium got their money?s worth when four of the five scheduled bouts ended via the short route. The boxing promotion held Friday in this southern Chinese city featured three WBO regional title fights and boxers from six different countries.
In the main event, Ian Lewison of the U.K. knocked out China?s Wu Zhiyu with a short left to the stomach in the second round and won the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific heavyweight title.
The fight started with booming exchanges that fight fans expect from heavyweights. But a sneaky left uppercut to the midsection dropped Wu on all fours and Referee Danrex Tapdasan reached the ten count at the 2:20 mark.
Lewison goes up to 12-2-1,8KO?s while Wu, who was actually a sub for this bout, suffered his first loss at 7-1,1KO.
The bout between China?s Xiang Jing and Joel Taduran was the only one that reached the full route but the Filipino lost by unanimous decision.
Taduran applied pressure from the start but Xiang countered well. Both boxers had their moments in landing clean punches to the jaw but neither had enough power to finish his opponent.
Xiang had the edge in volume during exchanges enabling him to build a wide lead. The judges? scores : Wu Debing (China) ? 97-93, Edward Ligas (Philippines) ? 98-92, Mekin Sumon (Thailand) ? 99-91.
Xiang captured the vacant WBO Oriental flyweight title. Taduran drops to 7-4-1, 1KO while Xiang goes up to 9-4-2, 1KO.
Sun Xiangxiang emerged as the next blue chip prospect from China when he stopped Campee Phayom of Thailand in the second round to acquire the vacant WBO Youth Asia-Pacific lightweight crown.
Sun dropped Phayom with a swift hook in the first round and finished the job in the next round with a sharp one-two combo that slammed Phayom on his back, flat on the canvas.
Referee Danrex Tapdasan signaled the end at 1:51 and Phayom was assisted by the medical personnel at ringside before he was able to walk out of the ring on his own.
Phayom was impressive in his hard fought unanimous decision loss to Lin Li Quan of China in Hong Kong last May and this made boxing insiders take notice of Sun?s performance here in Nanning.
Sun is now 8-0,6KO?s while Phayom suffered his second career loss at 9-2,7KO?s.
For the preliminary bouts:
Zhao Xiaoyu of China beat Pamod Kumar of India by TKO in the second round. Kumar went down once in the opening round and twice in the second round. Referee Surat Soikrachang called a halt at 1:51.
Wang Feihu of China won by second round TKO over Hisyam Sams of Malaysia. Wang decked Sams in the first and knocked him down again in the second. Sams had difficulty regaining his footing when he tried to get up prompting Referee Mekin Sumon to stop it at 33 seconds of the round.
The WBO title bouts were supervised by WBO VP for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo. This boxing event was promoted by Jiashu Chen and officiated by the Professional Boxing Commission of China.
