Carson, CA:- Golden Boy Promotions matched their undefeated rising lightweight star Christian Gonzalez (13-0-0, 12KO) against lowly Filipino super bantamweight slugger from Lipa City, Batangas, Jhon Gemino (12-7-1,5KO) in the undercard of the Salido-Vargas Mexican war at the StubHub.
Gemino was initially contacted to fight a fellow super bantamweight, Raul Hilares. But, when he got to Los Angeles, he was told that his original opponent got injured and they needed to find him another one. Indeed they found one but the guy was three divisions higher than him.
There was initially some concerns about the discrepancy in weights but Germino made a decision to take the fight because his wife is having a baby soon and he needs the money.
Tonight however, Gemino proved to his team that the concerns in the weight differences was really much to do about nothing.
Gemino came up the ring perky and full of confidence. There was no sign of any fear as we prepared him for battle. He was sure of his capabilities and he assured us that things will be okay.
When the fight got underway, he gave it all and at times stood toe to toe with his much bigger opponent. In fact when round 5 ended he told us that he wanted to slug it out with Gonzalez as he sense the kid was fast running out of steam in his punches. But his trainer advised him not to do so and stay away from harm because he feared that Gonzalez, being naturally much bigger, may land a haymaker.
In the end, Gemino lost the battle but Robert Diaz, the GBP matchmaker was so impressed with what Gemino showed in spite of the size difference that he told this writer that he wanted to bring him back and find him a 122-pounder opponent.
Diaz also did something that was almost never done. He gave the gloves used by Gemino for him to take home as souvenir.
After the fight the predominantly Mexican fans gave Gemino a rousing ovation and when we walked around after the fight, fans went to Gemino and asked for photos be taken with him.
Oh, the scores in the fight? The judges gave Gonzalez a unanimous decision with the scores as follows: 80-74, 80-74 and 79-71.
