ALA Boys Hit LA!

Los Angeles:- Perhaps lifted by the fact that their Teammates performed so spectacularly last weekend at the De La Salle Arena at Bacolod City, the two ALA Boys who came to town today are all excited and raring to go and hit the gym and train for their coming fights on July 9th up north at the San Mateo Event Center against opponents to be determined in the next few days.

Jason Pagara, the more reserved of the Pagara duo at the ALA Gym and the shy but magnificent Mark Magsayo today flew in through LAX together with Coach Edmund Villamor. Former WBC Flyweight champion Rodel Mayol who is now happily married and based in LA, met the trio and took them to their LA home base where they will join Albert Pagara who has been here earlier.

The undefeated Albert Pagara who sports a 26-0-0, 18KO record, meets Cesar Juarez of Mexico who holds a 17-5-0, 13KO slate. Juarez is coming off a back to back losses, first to Nonito Donaire and then to Giovanni Delgado, a fellow Mexican with a lot less fights than him.

Predictably, Juarez should be competitive against the fast surging Pagara and may even take Pagara to the deep waters. But the fight may end in a stoppage if Juarez elects to stand and slug it out with Pagara in the early rounds and end up being KO number 19 on Pagara?s record.

Mark Magsayo (14-0-0, 11KO) who PhilBoxing head honcho Dong Secuya told me two years back to keep an eye on, has yet to have an opponent. However, coming off a magnificent performance against the veteran Chris Avalos of Lancaster, CA, Michael Aldeguer, the ALA Boxing President may be hard pressed to find a suitable opponent that can test the mettle of the young Magsayo even further. But as Magsayo stated, ?I will fight anyone my promoters asks me to,? so perhaps Aldeguer may not have to work extra hard to find one. LA is a treasure trove of Mexican boxers and Zanfer Promotions is just a phone call away.

The same goes for Jason Pagara. To this day no concrete opponent has been lined up yet although that should not be a problem given Aldeguer?s connection Fernando Beltran in Mexico.

The ALA Boys will train at the Wildcard Gym in Hollywood under eagle eyes of Coach Edmund Villamor. Hopefully, occasionally Freddie Roach will find time to offer a tip or two although that maybe be slightly too far-fetched as there are rules at that gym that prohibits one trainer to dabble with another trainer?s fighters. Coach Edito Villamor will join them in a couple of weeks.

Actually, the primary reason why the ALA Boys train at the Wildcard is the preponderance of fighters in their weight classes who they can spar with, not the expectations that Roach will give them unsolicited advice. On a daily basis many fighters from all weight divisions and skill sets do their thing at the Wildcard. This gives everyone a fair chance to find a sparring partner.

This early, we are advising Filipino boxing fans in the Bay Area to mark their calendars. July 9 San Mateo Events Center. Tickets will be available in a few days. Tune in to ABS-CBN for more announcements.
