CEBU CITY ? Nicaraguan bantamweight champion Yesner Talavera and his trainer Nicaraguan boxing great Rosendo Alvarez said they have devised a plan how to inflict undefeated 'Prince' Albert Pagara his first loss when Talavera and Pagara meet this Saturday for the vacant WBO Jr Featherweight championship on 'Pinoy Pride 35: Stars of the Future' at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino here.
During Wednesday's presscon, former two-division world champion Rosendo Alvarez, who was the only boxer to score a knockdown against hall of famer and Mexican great Ricardo 'Finito' Lopez where they fought two highly contested world title bouts, and who is now training compatriot Yesner Talavera, said that Pagara is good but is in for a big surprise come Saturday night.
?Albert Pagara is a super great fighter, very strong, with hard punches but he's got slow hands.? Alvarez said. ?Yesner's speed is essential for this fight,? Alvarez, who clearly wants Talavera to out-box the hard-punching Pagara, said.
?Be assured that everyone will enjoy this fight. We're here to give a great spectacle in this town, the land of great champions, but on the night of the 27th, you will not have a champion,? Alvarez said.
For his part, Talavera, 21, with a record of 15 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, fighting for the first time outside his country and who has trained for more than two months for this fight, said that ?Pagara is good but not better than me.? Pagara, 22, has a undefeated record of 25 wins with 18 knockouts.
In the co-main event, Mark 'Magnifico' Magsayo's opponent, the easy-going Eduardo 'Fierita' Montoya, 22, with a record of 17 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw, who was accompanied by his father-trainer Magdaleno Montoya and manager Edmundo Gaitan, reminded everyone that his elder brother came to Cebu in 2011 and beat the highly touted Jason Pagara. ?I come here to win also,? Montoya said, although he admitted he did not study much the style of Magsayo, saying, ?Above the ring nobody knows what will happen. Whatever God so decides, so be it.?
Tony Rodriguez (3-1-0, 1KO), Montoya's stablemate who was sporting a black eye which he said he got from his sparring and who will face Kevin Jake Cataraja (2-0, 2KO), for his part said that he will use this opportunity as a springboard to become ?a star in the future.?
Tomorrow, Thursday, the visiting Latinos will meet face to face with their local rivals in the final press conference at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino at noon.
