CEBU CITY ? ALA Gym's rising star Mark 'Magnifico' Magsayo, in what will be a step up fight to his young boxing career, will take on former world title challenger Chris 'Hitman' Avalos of the United States on the undercard of Nonito Donaire's title defense, most likely against Hungary's Zsolt Bedak, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on April 23, ALA top honcho Antonio L. Aldeguer has informed Philboxing.

?We already have an agreement with Top Rank on the Magsayo-Avalos fight,? Aldeguer said. The April 23 card is a collaboration between ALA Promotions, ABS-CBN and Top Rank, who holds the promotional rights of Donaire and Avalos.

Avalos, 26, (26-4-0, 19KO) of Lancaster, CA lost to Carl Frampton of Britain for the IBF super bantamweight title in February last year at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He bounced back by defeating Filipino Rey Perez (20-7-0) in August but lost again in his last fight against undefeated Mexican Oscar Valdez (18-0-0, 16KO) on Sep. 11, 2015 in Las Vegas. Avalos had wins over Filipino contenders Drian Francisco and Rolly Lunas.

Magsayo, 20, (12-0-0, 10KO) from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, is the hottest prospect in town and many experts believe, with Magsayo's power, fast hands and great boxing skill, will reach the sport's pinnacle. He was coming off from three impressive knockout wins starting with Thailand's Sukkasem Kietyongyuth (13-4-0, 8KO) which he stopped in the 5th round in February last year, then over cocky Mexican Rafael Reyes (18-5-0, 14KO) in July and capped it with a spectacular 1st round demolition against erstwhile unbeaten Mexican prospect Yardley Suarez (14-1-0, 8KO) at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA on Oct. 17, 2015.

Avalos works out.

Magsayo pummels Kietyongyuth.

The Avalos fight will be a good gauge on Magsayo to see if he has reached the elite level this early in his career. Avalos, meanwhile will have to win the Magsayo fight to remain on the Top Rank promotional roster.

Oh wait -- before he will be able to face Avalos, Magsayo will have to win his fight against Mexico's Eduardo Montoya (17-4-1, 13KO) which is the a co-main event of the Albert Pagara vs Yesner Talavera bout on 'Pinoy Pride 35: Stars of the Future' on February 27 at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City.
