LEAGUE OF FISTS ENTERS THIRD ROUND

SHANGHAI, CHINA ? The third month of the League of Fists boxing tournament kicked off Friday with hotly contested matches and close decisions.

The evening was opened by Gao Jiyang vs Yang Zhengpeng, a give and take bantamweight battle that ended in a majority draw.

(Judges Mekin Sumon and Yang Hong ? 38-38, Feng Yaocheng ? 39-37 for Gao)

Ye Rongcheng prevailed by majority decision over Zhang Zhen in a closely fought superlightweight contest.

(Judges Sungworn Klungboonkrung (40-36) and Ji Naibin (39-37) for Ye, Tao Zhendong ? 38-38)

In another majority decision verdict, Zhang Qixiu beat Jiang Changjian in their superfeatherweight clash.

(Judges Mekin Sumon (39-37), Yang Hong (40-36) for Zhang, Feng Yaocheng ? 38-38)

Superlightweights Zhang Jinsheng and Aizi Aili engaged in a technical draw after a clash of heads inflicted cuts on both boxers. Aizi?s cut on the right eyelid was the one noticed first but the fight was allowed to continue. After the end of the round, it was noted that Zhang?s cut, also on the eyelid, started to bleed. Referee Danrex Tapdasan called the attention of the ring doctor and Zhang?s cut was assessed to be bigger leading to the stoppage of the fight.

Su Cheng won by TKO at the end of the second round against Li Jinwei . The southpaw Su was tagged early in the fight but he continued to press the action. Su?s power eventually took their toll and Li?s cornerman signaled at the end of round two that is boxer had taken enough punishment. Li also had a small x-shaped cut on his right eyebrow.

Su, a superwelterweight, is now 5-0,4KO?s with 1NC.

Ji Tao overpowered Sun Bohao in their bantamweight tussle to prevail by 40-36 in the scorecards of judges Ji Naibin, Tao Zhendong and Mekin Sumon.

In what would be the best fight of the night, superfeatherweights Lin Liquan and Chen Junfu waged a toe to toe battle with Lin winning by majority decision.

(Han Hongxiang and Sungworn Klungboonkrung ? 39-37, Yan Wenyong ? 38-38)

Lin, whose name appears as Li Quan Lin on boxrec, scored his third win in the League and is now 4-1-1,1KO.

Niu Zhongjie capitalized on his height and reach advantage to subdue Weng Tao in their super lightweight encounter by unanimous verdict.

(Surat Soikrachang and Mekin Sumon ? 40-36, Zhu Yuwen ? 39-37.)

Super welterweight Alimu Tuerson easily disposed of Qi Tianci by unanimous decision.

(Yang Hong and Yan Wenyong ? 40-36, Ji Naibin ? 39-37)

The evening was capped by superfeatherweight He Jianglu winning by four round technical decision over Niu Kangkang. Jianglu knocked down Niu in the opening round with a powerful flurry. He continued to dominate Niu and in the last round an accidental headbutt opened two cuts on He?s right eyebrow leading to the stoppage. He was ahead on all judges scorecards.

The fights were supervised and sanctioned by the Professional Boxing Commission (PBC) of China. The second fight day for the third round of competitions will be on November 7 still at the Mixing Room of the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The League of Fists boxing tournament is promoted by SECA and TOP RANK. The tournament winners will be crowned by the WBO as the Greater China champions in their respective weight categories.
