GENERAL SANTOS ? In what turned out to be a dramatic nerve-tingling barn-burner of a rematch, Kenny Demecillo of Cebu City survived a second round knockdown to stop local boy Daryl Basadre in the 8th round to revalidate his first fight win and captured the WBF Asia-Pacific Bantamweight title in front of a jampacked crowd at the Gaisano Mall of Gensan here Saturday night that also saw Basadre brought to the hospital by ambulance after he was totally exhausted after the stoppage.

Due to the inconclusive ending of their first fight where Basadre's camp claimed that the referee prematurely stopped the fight when Demicillo knocked down Basadre towards the end of the second round, the highly anticipated rematch met all expectations.

Basadre (R) scores a knockdown early in the second round.

Basadre boxed beautifully to control the tempo of the opening round, potshotting and throwing effective combinations on the surging Demicillo. Early in the second round, Basadre caught Demecillo with a beautiful uppercut as Demecillo was coming in sending Demecillo to the canvas. In the ensuing action as Demecillo was able to beat the count, Basadre, sensing an opportunity to stop his opponent early, poured everything and threw every punch in the book to the defending Demecillo whose back was against the ropes. This however, failed to finish off the matador and could be the glaring mistake that cost Basadre the fight. Towards the end of the round, Basadre was already catching his breath allowing Demecillo to make his own rally that almost took down the wobbly Basadre.

Basadre boxed again in the third and succeeding rounds and although it was a sure win for him if he could finish the fight, it was clear his stamina was no longer the same and and it seemed it was only a matter of time before Demicillo could catch him. In the 7th round, Demicillo cornered Basadre in a neutral corner and the two engaged in a phone-booth type of fight, both letting their hands go, so to speak, that sent the raucous crowd towards the ends of their seats. Although Basadre seemed ready to fall at every Demecillo bomb and at one instance was caught by a volume of unanswered punches, by sheer guts he survived the round, egged by local fans chanting his name, and made his own rally connecting to the also already exhausted Demecillo.

In the 8th round, the irresistable force Demecillo, drawing one final push, caught up Basadre with looping combinations towards the ropes that sent Basadre down, more on exhaustion than with the power of Demecillo's punches. Although he tried to and was able to stand up to beat the count, it was clear he had already lost his legs and the referee correctly stopped the fight as Basadre fell again to the canvas totally exhausted. He was brought to the hospital a short while in oxygen.

Demecillo improved his record to 11 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw while Basadre dropped to 14-3-0.

Reports on the undercards to follow...

The event dubbed 'Brawl at the Mall: Revenge or Revalidation' was promoted by Sanman Promotions of Jim Claude Manangquil and Dexter Tan in association with Gaisano Mall of Gensan.
