GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Daryl Basadre and Kenny Demecillo are set to do it all over again three months after their much talked about WBA Oceania bantamweight title match. This time, the WBF Asia bantamweight belt will be at stake to add spice to the controversial storyline.
In their first encounter, Basadre had a good opening round and seemed headed to take the second when he got caught by a left hook. Fight reports indicate that Demecillo followed it up with a barrage and a retreating Basadre fell backwards. Whether he lost his balance or was really hurt, Referee Ramuel Ovalo signaled the end of the fight giving Demecillo the TKO win with only six seconds left in the round.
Promoter Jim Claude Manangquil maintains that his boxer should have been given the benefit of the doubt. ?A mandatory 8-count should have been given so it could have been determined if he can no longer continue because it was a championship fight,? explained Manangquil during the press conference held today at the Sydney Hotel.
So the stage is set for their intriguing return bout set for ten rounds this September 26 at the Gaisano Mall Atrium of Gen. Santos City.
This card is billed as BRAWL AT THE MALL: REVENGE OR REVALIDATION.
Basadre (14-2-1,10KO?s) is eager to avenge his second career loss. ?I was just overconfident,? he said, ?I am going to use my footwork more so he won?t catch me again.?
Demecillo (9-3-1,6KO?s), who trains in the Omega gym of Cebu, had previously lost to Jetro Pabustan prior to beating Basadre.
Set to see action on the undercards is unbeaten prospect John Vincent Moralde (13W-0L,7KO?s), the WBC Asia featherweight titlist, who will fight Jerry Castroverde (6W-1L, 3 KO?s).
Moralde was involved in a ring tragedy in Australia last March. His opponent Brayd Smith, collapsed after losing the bout on points and died two days later. Moralde was supposed to fight again last June against Evgeny Smirnov of Russia but the bout fell through.
Moralde eventually fought again in July and stopped journeyman William George in three rounds.
?The death of Smith affected me,? Moralde said during the presscon, ?I thought about the possibility of the same thing happening to my next opponent, what will people think? They will call me a killer. But that is boxing. I feel Sad but we both tried to win, the crowd was cheering for him (Smith), so I had to fight hard.?
Also penned to fight on the undercard is Rinmar Metuda (7-0,3KO?s) who will be facing Jason Tinampay (5-1,4KO?s).
During the Saturday press conference, Sanman Promotions CEO Jim Claude Manangquil and CFO Dexter Tan spoke about promoting Gensan as a boxing hub and a destination for sports tourism. This fight card will be held after the Tuna Festival of Gensan.
Manangquil cites Basadre and Moralde as the boxers who he picks as the ones who will step up and fight for titles. ?Moralde already won abroad. I believe he can now go up to the next level and fight the belt holders in the featherweight division.? He stated.
Daryl Basadre gearing up for a rematch with Kenny Demecillo.
