THE TWO FIGHT CARDS ON THE SAME DAY IN THE SAME CITY

On Saturday, August 29, 2015, two promoters will be competing for the same fan base by holding their fight cards in the same city. I always wonder if is that ever a good idea?
At the Staples Centers in downtown LA, Al Haymon?s Premier Boxing Champions will have Leo Santa Cruz headlining a great fight card. He will be defending his belt against another local boy, Abner Mares. Santa Cruz and Mares are both world champions. Santa Cruz has held two belts and Mares, three. The fight card will be on ESPN therefore, free for the fans to watch on TV if they can?t make it to the venue.
The very large Latino boxing fans in LA have anticipated the Santa Cruz Mares fight for years but since both were under Golden Boy in the past years, the fight did not happen. Golden Boy had different goals for each of them.
However, now that both are under Al Haymon, the fight is happening. Haymon it seems has a different goal for both Sta Cruz and Mares. One of those is to make them fight each other, so the fight is finally happening.
The fight between these two brave and highly popular LA based and Mexican-born fighters will surely be a humdinger. It has the potential to be a fight of the year. After all, they both are known to be excellent fighters that always pleases the crowd every time they step on the ring. More importantly, it will be for the bragging rights in Los Angeles!
On the other side of town, at the Forum in Inglewood, two ancient warriors who don?t have anymore business to be on the ring, Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga will be fighting each other again and get a load of this:- the fight is on PPV distributed by an outfit called Integrated Sport for $49.95.
These two fighters are hoping to reprise their fight some years back when Mosley knocked out Mayorga with 1 second remaining in the 12th round. However, realistically that may be far from happening as both are now way past their prime and have not fought for a while. Hopefully no one gets hurt in this fight.
Besides the rumored low interest in the fight, another problem surfaced just recently which may jeopardize the fight and perhaps leading to the whole event being cancelled.
Promoter Don King allegedly filed a lawsuit in the District Court of Miami, FL claiming that he has a valid promotional contract for Ricardo Mayorga and asking a judge to prevent the fight at the Inglewood Forum on August 29th and stop it from happening.
At press time, lawyers from both sides are still sorting out the mess and the fight is still being actively promoted.
The Mosley-Mayorga fight spin makers are even campaigning to generate interest from the boxing media by reminding them that they need to apply for credentials. That is really appreciated by the media folks but it connotes a very negative vibe. Most spin makers don?t normally ?remind? media folks to file for credentials. They just simply expect them to know when to file before the deadline comes along.
Shane Mosley is also offering to give away two good lower box tickets to the ?authors of the top 25 stories written about the August 29 Grudge Match at the Forum?. Media folks must send him a copy of their piece and Mosley will decide who gets the tickets.
At late, none has been heard from Mayorga but it would not be a surprise if he pulls a really good one and offers cigars and beer to the media folks who can write the best story about their fight. It is said that it would not be too much of a hassle for him to give away such stuff. It?s fairly handy and available from where he is.
What is sometimes difficult to understand is why promoters do fight cards on the same day and in the same City. It?s easy to understand if vast distances separates the venues like for instance one in LA and one in NY, but a mere 20 miles separation? Come on.
Although the practice may be good practice for them from a business standpoint, with the more dominant promoter eventually killing off the business of the lesser one thus eliminating competition, its not too good for real boxing fans because they are forced to see one fight card and miss the other one when they may both want to see both.
Wouldn?t it be better if promoters don?t do these so fans can have a chance to see as many fights as they wish no matter how bad or good are the match-up?
Just asking!
